Here Comes the Sun...a New Chapter for Cora



        Since our last update Cora has shown steady improvement! We realized we had become sensitized to almost expect that if we had a "good" Cora day without incidence or struggle, we'd have a "bad" one on our next visit. After 2 weeks on her new feeding system though without her daily difficulty, we began to see a new baby emerge and she has steadily shown her face. Now with more energy, we are starting to work on oral mechanics (read: skills toward eating eventually) after successfully preventing an oral aversion (IYKYK), and allowing as much floor "play time"- her "physical therapy", to evaluate how she's growing & moving and helping her strengthen as much as she can tolerate. 
Praise!- she is on a current streak of 7 days without any apnea that she needs help recovering from! HUGE! With the help of some drugs to help decrease her secretions & the development of her gag/cough reflex & strength she can clear her airway! We still watch her closely but this is a huge step. Furthermore, we have also seen occasional swallowing movements and think she may be starting to swallow small amounts of her saliva, helping her too. (TMI yet?) skip over as needed... #nursemommy... 
     Her breathing has done well with her barely needing the small amount of oxygen sh'es currently on, and likely not to need soon after discharge!
     In the eating realm, we've been able to reintroduce milk on swabs in her mouth and see her accept that and even begin to do mouth things :) that can be precursor to sucking. 
That said, she's a long way from being able to sustain her growth (a whopping 8#14oz today!) eating by mouth, & as such are taking the next step of a surgical feeding tube port. Her surgery is scheduled for this Wednesday 6/25, early in the morning. We expect her to need 3-5 days of recovery before re-assessing if she's ready to come home!
     We now have her medical equipment at home to help her transition safely and it feels real that we are finally going to get to welcome our baby home!

The Next Chapter

The Next Chapter Begins.... Bright eyes Loves her tummy Well we are grateful to report Cora recovered well from her G-tube surgery. God even answered some specific requests when it came to her expected recovery needs. Her team said she was likely to come back needing breathing tube support and additional drugs to help her recover from the anesthesia effects- both of which we prayed during her procedure would not be necessary and both she did not need! Additionally, her nasal feeding tube had been removed overnight in anticipation for her surgery and as I held her before the procedure, Colin & I heard the clearest swallow we've ever heard! It just felt like a whisper of hope that we will not always be where we are in this moment with all its challenge. It was so difficult to let her undergo that semi-permanent procedure and watch your child be carried into an operating room. Certainly we could console ourselves with reminders of its necessity, but we remembered that she is God...
